File Your 1099s for Free by Using IRIS

If your business files any 1099 forms, you can now use a free IRS portal.

The Information Returns Intake System — abbreviated IRIS — is secure and doesn’t require any special software. It’s especially helpful if you’ve been sending the IRS 1099 paper forms.

Right now, you can only use IRIS for tax years starting in 2022.

You can use the platform to create, upload, edit, and view information and download completed copies of your 1099s. You can also e-file big and small volumes of 1099-series forms by typing in the information or uploading a downloadable template file.

According to the IRS, the benefits of IRIS include:

  • E-file security standards keep information safe and protected.
  • The portal is an accurate filing method that automatically detects filing errors and provides alerts for missing information.
  • You can submit automatic extensions and make corrections to information returns filed through the platform.
  • The IRS acknowledges receipt of the return in as early as 48 hours.
  • The platform keeps issuer information from year to year and previous years filed through the platform.
  • E-filing can reduce office expenses for paper, postage, and storage space.

Enrollment for the IRIS filing platform is now open, and if you want to use the platform, the IRS recommends that you start the process right way.

The Filing Information Returns Electronically system will still be available for bulk filing Form 1099 series and the other information returns through at least the 2023 filing season.
