The IRS admitted that some taxpayers are getting inaccurate balance-due letters, referred to as CP-14 notices.

According to the agency, the IRS hasn’t correctly applied some payments joint filers made for their 2021 tax returns.

Here’s what the IRS recommends you do if you get a notice:

  • If you know you paid all the tax you owned on your 2021 return, don’t respond to the notice.
  • If you didn’t pay all of your taxes owed, you should either:
  • Pay the remaining balance.
  • Ask the IRS for an installment agreement as spelled out in the direction of the CP-14 notice.
  • Call the IRS to ask for more payment alternatives.
  • If you don’t know whether or not you paid all you owed, check your online account.

The IRS says it will automatically adjust any penalties and interest.

If you have any questions about IRS notices you’ve received, please let us know.
